Chapter Nine

WITH BOTH LEAVES in the table, we easily managed to fit everyone without being too crushed together. Ireland took the head at one end—seeing as he was the one person who required more space—while Finn took the other so he had room to push Scarlett’s high chair in close to feed her. Because Max had said no to nameplates, everyone else chose their own places, sitting with their partners.

Aven was offering wine to those interested, while Max ensured there was a pitcher of water at each end of the table.

Once everyone was settled, Max spoke. “Krew and I would like to thank everyone for coming tonight. I know it’s a busy time of year, so we’re grateful you took time out of your schedules to celebrate the holidays with us. Dig in.”

Everyone moved to grab food, but I waved my hands and hollered, “Wait. Stop.”

When I had their attention, arms frozen in reach of food and bums half off chairs, I continued. “We need to say grace.”

Max leaned against my side. “I don’t think that’s necessary.”

“It is. Arden and Iggy are here, and they do the whole bless the food and thank the big man upstairs bit when they eat, don’t you?” I flipped my gaze between the two.

Iggy fought off a smile while Arden pinched his lips together, eyes shining. “We do, but it’s okay. We don’t have to. We can skip it once. It won’t hurt.”

“Nonsense. We can’t skip it. I wanted this Krewmas to be all-inclusive. Like a trip to Tahiti where you get everything all bundled up into one cute little Krew-package so no one feels left out, or like they came over and didn’t get the extras they were expecting. That’s why we bought the baby Jesus.” My eyes blew wide. “Oh shit! Baby Jesus is still in the closet. I mean, he’s not gay—that I know of—but he’s in the closet. My closet. In the bedroom. With Mary and Joseph.”

“Does anyone else feel like this is the start of a bad joke?” Rigger asked.

Ireland snorted and ducked his head. Raven covered his face and laughed.

“I’m serious. Everyone freeze. No one touch the food until baby Jesus is here for the festivities. I need two minutes.”

I flew off my chair and darted down the hall. The shopping bag with Jesus, his manger, and Mary and Joseph had ended up pushed to the back of the closet. I dug them out and raced into the living room. I scrambled, sorting out the display under the Christmas tree before zipping back to the table.

“Done. My apologies. It won’t happen again. Jesus is here, and all is good. Now, where were we?”

“We were going to eat,” Max said.

“Actually, I thought Krew was going to say grace,” Beck said. Gray nudged his side, but Beck’s grin grew wider.

“Right. Grace.”

“If you think it’s necessary, why don’t you let Arden or Iggy do the honors?” Max asked warily.

I swatted Max’s arm. “They are our guests. I can manage to say grace, thank you very much.
